Reader Mailbag: Kassandra, Atsu, and Similar Beginnings Leading to Different Ends

A longtime reader wrote in with a great question and I've finally played enough Ghost of Yōtei to be able to answer it.

Reader Mailbag: Kassandra, Atsu, and Similar Beginnings Leading to Different Ends

The reader asks:

[Kassandra from Assassin's Creed: Odyssey and Atsu from Ghost of Yōtei both] lost their family, yet, they choose distinct paths. Atsu, thus far, is driven by revenge and is spiraling towards darkness; Kassandra, at least my interpretation of her, is driven by her hope of reuniting her family.

I'm interested on your take on how these characters diverged so much despite having a similar backstory.

Well, the glib answer is that despite their similar backgrounds, Kassandra and Atsu have been written to serve whatever story their respective writers wanted to tell.

I'll unpack what I mean by this further, but first we must establish a baseline for emotional realism for both of these stories. Please also note that this essay includes minor spoilers for AC: Odyssey but no spoilers for Ghost of Yōtei.
